Blogging, Hitler, and The Rock Music

Yeehoo! Another Americano blogging about Berlin (but this time via Texas!). Heather, a former Berliner, is "an art historian, currently writing a dissertation on painting and politics in East and West Germany in the 1950s." Cool. A solid (and funny!) collection of Berlin/Germany-related links and thoughts.

On the monitors this morning in the U-Bahn: The latest Hitler-related "scandal."

Some dude is posing for photos with tourists (for a price, of course) as the Führer (moustache and all) at Checkpoint Charlie.

Which I find strangley reassuring, since it finally confirms my long-held theory that:

I instantly imagined an elderly couple from the American Midwest, having gathered assorted relatives together in a 1970s-style Topeka living room for their annual European vacation slideshow:

"Now, where was that we met old Adolf again, Mildred?" asks Frank.

"Oh, you old Mr. Forgetful sillypants, that was in Cologne - right before you cursed the waiter for serving you that frizzly water."

"Oh sweet Mary do I hate that frizzly European water! Whoever the hell came up with the crazy idea of putting bubbles into perfectly good drinking water, why they outta lock him up and throw the key overboard."

"Now c'mon, Frank, you just simmer down or you're likely to get your angina started up again."

Alas, I digress. Sometimes I feel like I could digress an entire novel, if only I had the time. Readers are welcome to imagine their very own living room scenario at this point. Or not.

Finally, everybody likes to rock and the time is right:

Tomorrow night there's an indie pop outfit called Tobacco (from Wiesbaden) playing at the Bastard. Here's an MP3 (2.6 MB) from their previous album, and another (2.2 MB) from their current album. This is my official "Berlin Concert Tip of the Week." There may or may not be another tip next week.

Update! So it turns out that the "dude" playing Hitler for the tourists is none other than the controversial "arteest" Christoph Schlingensief (say that last name for me three times, kids!), and, more precisely, a bid to hype the opening of his new play, "Kunst & Gemüse, A. Hipler," which began its run at the Volksbühne yesterday.

Is it just me, or is Germany kind of littered with these, um, dudes? Schlingensief directed a version of Parsifal at the Wagner Festival in Bayreuth earlier this year, and Alex Ross' review should give you a pretty good idea of his schtick. In a nutshell, his work straddles the worlds of art, political discourse, and anarchy - often more heavily depending on the anarchy than the other two.
